The S.E. Belcher Chapel and Performing Arts Center is the focal point of great performances in our area, and over the last ten years has brought world-class artists to East Texas and Longview. LeTourneau University students worship in chapel services there three times a week. Its acoustics, technical abilities, and beauty could place it in any major city. It is truly a marvel of which we can all be proud.
We have at this moment a unique opportunity to furnish the Belcher Center with a high-quality organ, an instrument that is usually present in major performance halls. Hurricane Harvey did minimal damage to the cabinet of a Houston church's three-manual Rodgers electronic organ, which has been repaired and is being offered to us at half-price. This instrument, while not being a pipe organ that would cost $500,000 or above, sounds nearly identical to one, and is available for $28,000. This will allow us to perform choral and symphonic works that require an organ, to sing hymns in chapel and other large gatherings, and to present concerts on the instrument alone.
Our desire is to acquire this instrument before the end of the 2018 year. There are 497 sounds, keys and pedals on the organ and we are offering individuals the opportunity to purchase one or more of these for $75 apiece. In this way we can all pitch in (no pun intended) and climb the mountain one step at a time (again, no pun intended).
Perhaps there is someone who comes to your mind who has a passion for hymns or traditional church music and would like to see a powerful organ in the Belcher Center. Please pass on this project to him or her. This would make a great memorial or honorary gift, providing excellent music to generations of students and East Texas audiences for years to come.
All donations are tax-deductible. If you prefer to send a check, make it out to LeTourneau University, earmark it “Organ fund,” and mail it to Dr. Jim Taylor, LeTourneau University, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave., Longview, TX 75601.
